A Thanksgiving Wedding at The Hemingway Room at The Commons Calgary

High school sweethearts Evelyn and Connor embarked on their journey to forever with a Thanksgiving wedding at The Hemingway Room at The Commons Calgary. As their wedding photographer, I had the honour of capturing every precious moment of their special day.

We kicked off the morning at the beautiful The Westley Hotel, where Evelyn and her girls got ready amidst laughter and excitement. The anticipation could be felt as we made our way across the street for the couple’s first look. This is where our photography adventure begins. Against the backdrop of downtown Calgary, Evelyn and Connor shared a perfect, intimate moment that set the tone for the day.

One of the many advantages of having a wedding on a Sunday in downtown Calgary is the exclusivity of the location. With the city at our feet, we enjoyed uninterrupted moments. Evelyn’s stunning bouquet, created by Small Flower Floral Studio, added a burst of colour to the day, perfectly complementing the vibrant fall palette.

I wasted no time in capturing portraits of the happy couple, allowing Evelyn and Connor to savour each other’s company before joining their wedding party. Our next stop was the Calgary Central Library, where the iconic architecture provided a picturesque backdrop for their photos. Despite the unseasonably warm October weather, the shade of the library’s archway provided a welcome respite, ensuring that every shot was picture-perfect.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the ceremony at The Hemingway Room, officiated by the couple’s friend and groomsman, Luke. I love the recent trend of couples asking their closest friends or family to officiate their weddings—it adds a deeply personal touch to the ceremony.

Nestled within The Commons Calgary, The Hemingway Room exudes understated elegance and undeniable charm. With sleek concrete floors and three grand west-facing windows adorned with original exposed brick, this venue offers a captivating blend of modern sophistication and historic character. Named in homage to the renowned novelist and journalist, The Hemingway Room carries a rich legacy, having once served as the workspace for Calgary’s iconic alternative news publication, Fast Forward Weekly. Its spacious layout accommodates up to 175 guests for a standing reception or 130 guests for a seated reception, making it the perfect setting for intimate gatherings and grand celebrations alike.

Following the heartfelt exchange of vows, guests joined Evelyn and Connor across the street at The Dandy Brewing Company while the venue transformed for the reception. Urbane Culinary provided a delectable Thanksgiving feast, setting the stage for heartfelt toasts from the couple’s parents and siblings.

As evening descended, Evelyn and Connor took to the dance floor for their first dance and parent dances, surrounded by their loved ones. The intimate atmosphere of The Hemingway Room at The Commons Calgary provided the perfect backdrop for mingling and creating lasting memories.

When I asked about their favorite aspect of the venue, Evelyn and Connor expressed their love for its aesthetic and cozy ambiance, which facilitated meaningful connections between their extended families. After all, a lot of them were meeting for the first time at this wedding.

Evelyn and Connor, congratulations on a truly magical wedding day filled to the brim with love, laughter, and those unforgettable moments that will forever hold a special place in your hearts. As I reflect on the joyous celebration we shared, I’m filled with gratitude for the honour of documenting your love story. As you begin this new chapter together, may each day be filled with boundless love, laughter that echoes through the years, and cherished memories that continue to grow sweeter with time. Here’s to a lifetime of happiness, adventure, and countless moments of love shared between you two. Cheers to your journey together as husband and wife!
